How to Determine if Your Film is 8mm or Super 8mm
To determine whether you have 8mm or Super 8mm film, check the following features:
1. Film Hole (Sprocket) Size & Position
8mm Film: Larger, evenly spaced sprocket holes along the edge.
Super 8mm Film: Smaller sprocket holes, closer to the edge of the film.
2. Frame Size
8mm Film: Smaller image area (wider sprocket holes take up more space).
Super 8mm Film: Larger image area (smaller sprocket holes allow for a bigger picture).
3. Reel Differences
8mm Reels: Have a larger center hole (~8mm).
Super 8mm Reels: Smaller center hole (~4mm).
4. Film Edge Markings
Some Super 8mm film has "Super 8" or "Kodak" printed on the edge.
Buying the Right Projector
If you have 8mm film, buy a Regular 8mm projector.
If you have Super 8mm film, buy a Super 8mm projector.
Some Dual 8 projectors can play both formats.
