Product Details

  • Dual Format Compatibility: The 471A can play both 8mm and Super 8mm film formats, allowing users to switch between film types without the need for separate machines.
  • Automatic Threading: This projector features an automatic film threading mechanism, which simplifies the process of loading film into the projector, reducing the risk of damaging the film.
  • Variable Speed Control: Allows the user to adjust the speed of the film projection, which is helpful for playback at normal speed or for slow-motion viewing.
  • Forward and Reverse Projection: The 471A can project films in both forward and reverse directions, providing flexibility in viewing and rewinding films.
  • Adjustable Focus and Framing: Users can fine-tune the focus and framing of the projection to ensure a sharp, clear image.
  • Built-in Lamp: It uses a bright projection lamp to display the film clearly on a screen or wall.
  • Compact Design: Although it is a fully functional projector, the Bell & Howell 471A is relatively portable and can be easily stored when not in use.

This projector was part of Bell & Howell’s well-known line of reliable home entertainment products and is often regarded as durable, though, given its age, you may need to check for working condition and any required maintenance, especially with the projector bulb or film feeding mechanism.

    Bell & Howell 8MM & Super8MM projector

Posted by Amy on 17th Jul 2024

I am very satisfied with my "new" projector. This is the exact model that I grew up with and know how to use. The click click click sound of the film moving through the machine is strangely nostalgic. The only cause for the 4 instead of 5 star rating is that the take up reel can be a bit wobbly but overall it holds. I've received a shipment of my parents' films going back to the 50s as well as films from our growing up in the 60s and 70s. Reviewing these in advance of digitizing some of them with a different machine is very important. On a couple films, during viewing the film will suddenly shift to reverse and I'm not certain why that happens. I'm thinking it's due to some kink in the film but need to look into this. It has happened just a couple times.
